June, 2006 Newsletter

Dear Email Friends,
We have just completed our 30th anniversary season and are making preparations for our 31st. Casting will take place soon for the first play of the season, the comedy SYLVIA by A. R. Gurney. Gurney has written many successful plays, but he is probably best known for LOVE LETTERS which has been produced all over the world. We are happy to be able to present SYLVIA, a delighful play which has enjoyed great popularity in North America, but is relatively new to Europe. The premiere of SYLVIA is on 21 September and the previews (at reduced prices) begin on 18 September. You can already book tickets for all of our plays next season. Information about each of the plays can be found here.

Did you miss any of these plays from our 2005/2006 Season?

THE FOURPOSTER by Jan de Hartog

LONDON SUITE by Neil Simon

THE GLASS MENAGERIE by Tennesse Williams

BAD BLOOD by Richard Stockwell

An anecdote from the past
Once a young mother brought her infant son to the theatre and tried to check him at the cloakroom. The cloakroom attendants refused to take the baby, of course. We haven't started a baby sitting service, certainly not for the price of checking a coat. “But I don't know what to do with him. I can't find a babysitter and I want to see the show," she said. It made sense to her, but there was nothing we could do to help.

LIVE AD

This is a photo from the "Live Ad" which a promotion team from the UK presented at our theatre recently. The purpose of the event was to encourage people in Hamburg to travel to London. (Do you need encouragement?) Marek Erhard (center) took part in the sketch.

(2005 / 2006)

Die Hamburger Theaternacht

The "Hamburg theatre night" takes place on 9 September, 2006 beginning at 19 hours. Busses will leave from Hachmann Platz and take anyone who is interested to virtually all of the theatres in Hamburg. Each theatre will present a scene, sketch or other form of entertainment. The purpose of this event is, of course, to entertain you, but also to give you a chance to see the inside of theatres you may not have gone to before.

The English Theatre of Hamburg will perform a scene from the first play of the season, SYLVIA by A. R. Gurney, at 19.00, 20.00, 21.00, 22.00, 23.00 and 00.00 hours. The Ernst Deutsch Theatre, which is a short walking distance from us, will present a scene from their current program as well. The price for the entire evening is only € 10,-- if you buy your ticket in advance from a theatre or theatre ticket agency (starting 7 August), € 12,-- if you wait until 09.09.06. These prices include transportation.

Once you are on the bus you can relax because you will be driven around Hamburg on this guided tour of Hamburg theatres. Due to the success of this event in the past two years, it is being held again for the third time. We'll remind you again about the "Hamburger Theaternacht" in our August newsletter. Theatre lovers will surely enjoy this opportunity to take a peek at the many plays being offered simultaneously in Hamburg, a city known for its wide spectrum of cultural activity.
